Excerpt:

The first thing Kayla felt as she came around was the painful pounding of her head, she shakily reached up and felt the bump on the side of her head. Blinking, Kayla pushed herself up and tried to remember what happened. Her mind felt sluggish and drug-hazed. She looked up and saw the moon peeking out from behind a cloud. The screams of people reached her ears, drifting along the breeze flowing through the open window. Kayla gripped the window frame and pulled herself up onto her jelly-like legs. Wincing at the pain in her head, she lifts it and looks outside. The whole city seemed to be on fire. Large smoldering craters pocketed the landscape and fires danced from building to building. Staggering back on her weak legs, she wobbled out of her room and run into her mother's room. 

"Mum!?"

The dark room was empty, the bed hadn't even been slept in. Kayla struggled to think around the growing panic in her mind. She raced back up to her room, acting on pure survival instinct as fear and panic seize her mind. Grabbing her hiking pack, she began throwing gear into it. Hands shaking, she sweeps stuff off her desk in search of her phone once her bag was full. 

"This is messed up man," Kayla muttered as she dialed her mother's number.

She held her breath as the phone began to ring through, then the dial tone sounded. 

"Dammit! What the hell is going on!?"

Kayla raced back down the hall, swinging her pack on her back as she did.
